Stabilization in Filmic Pro

Filmic Pro offers a range of stabilization options under the Settings menu on both iOS and Android.

The following stabilization options are available on iOS:

  • OFF: When set to OFF, all forms of stabilization are disabled and no digital crop is applied to the frame. This is ideal for tripod use and delivers ultra-low preview latency.
  • Standard: Optical image stabilization (OIS) and Apple's 'standard' software stabilization (EIS) are both engaged concurrently for smooth results. This is ideal for handheld shooting. Minimal preview latency is introduced for a responsively smooth filming experience (approx. 4 frame latency).
  • Cinematic: OIS and Apple's 'cinematic' software stabilization are enabled for extra smooth results. Ideal for handheld shooting and vlogging. **WARNING: Cinematic IS introduces high preview latency of approximately 1 second!**This makes it less than ideal for fast paced shooting where you need a near-realtime preview. It is better suited to applications where you do not need to look at the live preview for example vlogging or mounted to a vehicle.
  • Cinematic+: OIS and Apple's 'cinematic extended' software stabilization are enabled for extremely smooth results. Ideal for handheld shooting and vlogging. WARNING: Introduces extreme preview latency of approximately 2.5 seconds!!! This makes it unsuitable for fast paced shooting where you need a near-realtime preview. It is better suited to applications where you do not need to look at the live preview for example vlogging or mounted to a vehicle.

New in Filmic Pro v7.3.1: Latency Free Preview (iOS only)

  • Under Settings > Interface menu, you can now enable a Latency Free Preview for use with Cinematic and Cinematic+ stabilization.
  • When Cinematic or Cinematic+ plus is selected as your stabilization level and Latency Free Preview is enabled, we deliver a latency free live preview. However, live analytics, gamma curve and film look emulation previews are unavailable (your gamma curve or film look is still recorded, you just can’t preview it).
  • Use Latency Free Preview when real time preview is more important than live analytics or the ability to preview your chosen film look or gamma curve.

The following stabilization options are available on Android (device specific):

  • OFF: All forms of stabilization are disabled and no digital crop is applied to the frame. This is ideal for tripod use.
  • OIS: Optical image stabilization (OIS) is enabled. No additional software stabilization (EIS) occurs. This delivers smooth natural results ideal for handheld filming.
  • EIS: Electronic software stabilization (EIS) is enabled. Optical image stabilization is disabled. Offers high levels of stabilization but can introduce digital warping.
  • OIS + EIS: Both optical (OIS) and software based image stabilization (EIS) are enabled.
